String ensembles are arguably the most popular form of chamber music; but there is also a wide range of high-quality pieces written for woodwind or brass groups, as the Macao Orchestra aims to showcase in this performance. The programme includes two chamber pieces by 20th-century composer Francis Poulenc: “Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone, FP 33”; and “Sextet for Piano and Winds, FP 100”. These are characterised by the Macao Orchestra as “a fusion of refined and restrained neoclassical style with rich jazz elements”. The programme also features Johannes Brahms’ “Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115”, a work from the German composer’s later years, and featuring a melodic yet melancholy clarinet and a lyrical, lingering string quartet. The show is scheduled to last approximately 60 minutes, with no interval.
